A galaxy is a gravitationally bound system of stars, stellar remnants, interstellar gas, dust, and dark matter. Galaxies are fascinating targets since they can take on a number of different types (i.e. elliptical, spiral, etc.). Most galaxies outside of the Local Group are very distant but can be imaged in some detail with good conditions.
